“What Has BSP NOVA Done for You?”

Beyond Strength Performance NOVA Members Speak!

For this week’s blog post, we decided to ask the members of Beyond Strength Performance NOVA a simple question…

“What has BSP NOVA done for you?”

The results were awesome… here’s what they had to say:

BSP NOVA has changed the way I feel about working out.  I never knew being part of a gym would feel like a second family. My experience since my first day there has been awesome, more than I ever expected.  I have always been active and athletic but never really “worked out” in a gym, so I didn’t really know the right things to do.  Joining a gym was nerve-racking for me because I didn’t know if i would fit in.  But, from the moment I arrived it felt like I belonged.  Everyone made me feel welcome.  From the coaches, to the members who had been there a long while.  I have had some obligations and issues come out with family and work that kept me out for a few weeks but I never felt like anyone judged me for not putting in the time.  I look forward to my time with BSP NOVA and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

What has BSP NOVA done for me?  When I walk into the gym, I know I am coming to a place where I am NOT anonymous, where I am encouraged to aim high, and given the tools to get to my goals.  I say tools – but what I really mean are the coaches who take the time to explain why I am doing what I am doing, so I get better, a community who is supportive and encouraging, and a place where I can focus on rebuilding my body in a way that shows me that, with time, strength, fitness and health are actually within my grasp.

Not sure if you want this for the blog – but I have one last thing to say – the gym is like a sanctuary – where the outside world – work, family, other pressures have no place there – it is truly a happy place for me.  [Yeah, we want that for the blog 🙂 ]

I have been involved in some sort of exercise/nutritional program pretty much my whole life.  I would jump in, take weight off, then either lose interest or get injured.  This has been a pattern for the last 25 years.  Upon starting BSP NOVA I have been learning to be more patient with my programs and not seeing immediate, drastic results.  What I mean is that you have to start at the beginning: breathing, building strength slowly, being more balanced.  Although I felt like I wasn’t making any progress after immediately starting BSP NOVA, by about week 4 of my program I was noticing a difference both physically and mentally.  BSP NOVA meets you where you are, and helps make you the best version of you.  Although I’m training amongst young fighters at Disciple MMA Academy, I don’t feel intimidated.  The BSP NOVA and Disciple MMA community makes me feel stronger.

BSP NOVA has given me the chance to continue growing both athletically, as well as from a knowledge standpoint, by giving me a level of programming and insight I didn’t know was possible for the average person to receive.  I’ve gotten a much better understanding of how I can move and function, my strengths and weaknesses, what works for me, and what doesn’t.  My biggest worry was my rather extensive lists of injuries that would probably leave me in pretty poor shape by 30.  But, now that I’m approaching thirty, and having trained with BSP NOVA for the last few years, I feel I haven’t even touched the prime of my abilities.  I expected just a lot of strength and conditioning training, but I have also learned more about range of motion, proper recovery and rest techniques, and a better understanding of how the big lifts work into a well-rounded program

Where do I begin?  BSP NOVA is a gym experience like none I’ve ever been a part of in my 45 years.  There is more camaraderie there than in all the gyms I’ve ever belonged to put together.  BSP NOVA provides needed accountability (for me), because of the personal relationships I easily and quickly developed with you and all the other coaches.  It’s a place I look forward to coming – which is something I’ve NEVER ever experienced previously.  With all other gyms I’ve ever belonged to, going was a chore that I grudgingly added to my list of things-to-do, and dreaded checking off.  With BSP NOVA it is literally the polar opposite – I feel so lucky and appreciative when my schedule allows me to get there!  What other gym has spawned such friendships?  It’s astonishing, really, how positive the whole experience has been in so many ways.  When Rob [Kristin’s husband] started attending he asked me several times if I thought I’d like to join.  I said no, over and over, because I was worried that I’d be the only person there like me: had some weight to lose, wasn’t comfortable in tiny workout clothes, wasn’t already muscular, fit and able to do what I perceived to be “crossfit” type exercises.  I worried I’d be intimidated.  I worried I’d make a fool of myself.  I worried I wouldn’t be able to do any of the exercises in my first program and that I’d have to quit.

I was so delighted when I found it wasn’t anything like what I thought it would be!  The coaches are the furthest thing from intimidating.  It’s obvious they have tons of knowledge and know what they are doing, but they are able to relate to every level of knowledge and fitness that walks through the door.  I love that everyone is doing their own thing, working their own program, working on improving themselves.  No one is standing around staring at rows and rows of people on treadmills and comparing themselves to one another.  Instead, everyone – EVERYONE – coaches and clients alike, are constantly encouraging one another and lifting each other up.  Everyone is trying to learn something – again, coaches and clients alike.  It’s really an amazing, healthy, high performing culture that you’ve created.  You should be so proud of what BSP NOVA has become, Chris.  I’m so appreciative of the whole experience and so proud of the progress I’ve personally made. I would be lost without BSP NOVA!

I had always been an athlete, and when age and injuries took that away from me, belonging to BSP NOVA gave it back.

I felt like I was part of a team again, with coaches and teammates all like-minded striving for a common goal: to be better than yesterday.

I wasn’t scared of anything in joining BSP NOVA, but I was worried that it would be like a regular old gym.

But it wasn’t.

It’s like a team, which I love.

I decided to join BSP NOVA after talking with a couple friends who were already members.  At first I was really apprehensive about going, but I figured everything in the past had failed me, so why not give something new a try.  I had been an athlete my whole life, playing travel and high school basketball and softball.  But, I went to college and gained around 60 pounds, and I felt I needed someone who was used to working with former athletes.

After a crazy first year at my job, I decided to start on a really cool adventure of hiking all 50 states.  For this task, I really needed to get in a specific kind of shape, and I knew I needed a tough and smart trainer who would cater to my needs.  When I first walked into the gym I was completely intimidated, but after only 15 minutes of being there I knew it was the place for me.  Chris instantly reminded me of a coach I had growing up in travel softball.  He is smart, kind, and extremely passionate about making each and every one of us successful.

This isn’t just a gym, its a family.  We all support and help each other inside of the gym and out.  I finally found a place that feels like home.  When I fail, we all fail.  When I succeed, we all succeed.  I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be around and learn from.  I am truly blessed to have found BSP NOVA, and I am thankful every day that I did.

In the year and a half that I have been with BSP NOVA, they have made me a stronger person, both physically and mentally.  They have increased my awareness of the necessity in maintaining proper form for each routine, crucial to ensuring the maximum benefit while remaining free of injury.  BSP designs my fitness programs to fit my developing level, including any specific needs that need to be addressed.  BSP NOVA programs are extremely effective and engaging, enabling me to focus on a healthier me.

BSP NOVA has top notch coaches. They give individualized attention to their members, thoroughly demonstrating each routine, stressing the importance in paying attention to detail, while offering encouragement and motivation.  It’s the perfect place to increase muscle strength and endurance… the proof is in the results that are produced!

BSP NOVA is different than what I expected, as they give 200% in all that they do!  They stay focused to ensure that each member of the BSP family reaches and/or exceeds their potential in a very encouraging environment.

My fears are that one day there will be a Dr. instructing me to cease or decrease my current exercise regimen (this will be an unpleasant encounter with said Dr ;-))!

Another fear is that coach Jon will one day stop dancing for us!

Thanks to Chris, Todd, Jon, Geoff and Kenny for making my life at BSP an amazing experience.  I will always appreciate it!

If I stay long enough Todd might learn to like country music 🙂

[Don’t hold your breath on that last one]

BSP NOVA helped me revive my dexterity and range of motion.  My BJJ game was a lot better after just my first month of training!

I was scared of the deadlift coming in, but the BSP NOVA coaches showed me the way and I was able to.  Now it’s my favorite lift!

Last but not least, my nutrition has changed drastically.  Now I’m more mindful of what I eat, and have learned to stay away from junk.  Thank you Chris and team, you guys have changed me for the better.  Love you guys!!!
