I never was considered, or even considered myself to be an athletic person.  Yeah, I enjoyed playing the occasional pickup game, but I hated to run (or do anything with cardio).  Food was my drug that I would abuse- frequently.  I would go weight lifting at the gym with no results.  From childhood to about 3 years ago (2010), I fluctuated between chubby and fat, and never really minded it.  Then, one day I hit over 250lbs in body weight!  That, at my height (5’7”) was a cause to be concerned for my health.  So I gave myself a realistic goal to get down below 200lbs.  To help me in my journey, I decided to take on a sport that I had interest in and really enjoyed to watch- mixed martial arts.  This decision unknowingly took me to the business right next to Beyond Strength Performance NOVA- Disciple Mixed Martial Arts Academy.

After attending a couple different classes for a year at Disciple, I found myself developing a passion for the art of Muay Thai.  Eventually I wanted to compete and see how far I could go.  So, after another year of self-development and conditioning, I decided that I would take on my battles in the Featherweight class.  Therefore, I first approached Beyond Strength Performance NOVA to help me with my weight-cut.  Boy did he deliver!  He offered me guidelines on food consumption that I needed to follow throughout my fight camp, and the final week’s weight-cut/replenishment.  With hard work and discipline, I weighed in at 141lbs for my first fight!  I could not believe it!  BSP NOVA’s weight-cut program guaranteed me making the mark.  I agreed to a few more fights after that, but injuries kept me from fighting…

Nearing back to 100% injury free and little to no activity, weight inevitably popped back on the scale and strength levels went down.  It was time to get back to work and into fighting shape.  But wanting to come back stronger and faster, I knew I needed the proper guidance.  So I again went straight to Chris at BSP NOVA to make me better than I ever was.  This time we started from the ground up and went into strength/conditioning.  My Goals were submitted.  Movement capabilities were evaluated, and deficiencies were isolated and improved- all of which were necessary for the master mind to cater my programs.  This, my friends was the beginning of the making of a monster.

It has been 6 months of hard work and I am in the best shape I have ever been in my life!  Not only am I stronger than I ever was before, but more agile and we’re only getting started!  Simply put, I feel like a completely different person. Every program BSP NOVA creates for me is like a breath of fresh air.  In fact, I’m currently in line for a new one next week!  Challenges are set and personal records are broken.  I am very grateful to have the professionals of BSP NOVA in my corner…

Other Athlete Testimonials

2013 was the start of my 23rd year playing volleyball; including 3 years at George Mason University.  Most of those 23 years involved playing through pain and getting sidelined with injuries such as lower back pain, torn tendons (Achilles, wrist and shoulder), and torn/strained muscles (calf, hamstring).  After college I put on weight and became more injury prone. Although I was able to lose weight following magazines workouts, I was never able to cut down on injuries or gain the strength that resulted in improved performance on the court. Every injury resulted in longer recovery times and eventual weight gain. In 2012, I sat out of the Chesapeake Regional Volleyball Championships due to injury. During the 2nd day of competition at the 2012 US National Open Volleyball Championships in Utah, I suffered calf injuries in both legs and watched my team finish a respectable but disappointing 9th place. The team jokingly blamed me for finishing outside the top 3 and recruited 2 younger players for the 2012-2013 season.  After months of rehab I started this season once again out of shape and fearful of injuries. In January I came to Chris and BSP to help me get back to form. Chris developed a personalized progressive plan for me and provided the positive but honest feedback I needed. By the end of February I lost 35lbs, won my company’s weight-loss challenge and dropped two pant sizes. Although I experienced two lower back injuries this year, my recovery times were reduced to days instead of weeks. Chris’s training and guidance resulted in increased vertical, power, and quickness on the court. I was able to help my team win 6 of 7 regular season tournaments; including the 2013 Chesapeake Regional Championships.  At the 2013 US National Open Volleyball Championships in Kentucky I played injury free and contributed to a 5th place finish.  I look forward to continuing my training with Chris and BSP and helping to improve our results at the 2014 US National Open Volleyball Championships in Arizona.
