Different Grips for Different Lifts

One of the biggest mistakes we’ve been seeing in the gym lately involves the use of the wrong grip for a given lift.  Many people don’t realize it, but we should be using different grips for different lifts.  Today’s video should help to get you off on the right foot- er, um, hand.  Yeah, hands.

You watched the whole video, right?  If you were thinking this was about the sweet karate moves, it’s not.  You’re going to need to come in for that.

BUT, we did get some questions about grip for pull-ups and chin ups after filming this.

Here’s the deal… we treat our pull-ups and chin almost exactly like the overhand barbell lifts, fingertips and crush grip the bar, with one exception.

The pull-up and chin up are thumb-less, which in this case is called a tactical grip.  We put all of our fingers AND our thumb over the bar for pull-ups, and under the bar for chin ups.  This has the best carryover to other activities, like climbing.  Are there times where a pinch grip is used?  Yup.  So could you use your thumbs for your pull-ups and chin ups?  You bet your sweet cheeks you can.  But, most of the time, we go with the thumb-less tactical grip.
