Coffee is everyone’s best friend, amiright?! Well today I’d like to introduce the coffee of exercise, neural charge training. Seriously, neural charge training is like caffeine to your central nervous system (CNS), and when used correctly, can do a handful of awesome things:
- Wake you up
- Prepare you for heavy strength work
- Build explosiveness
- Teach tension and relaxation
- Help with recovery
Neural Charge Training (video ↓↓↓↓↓)
How:
- Pick 5-6 exercises, alternating upper and lower body movements, and perform them in circuit fashion
- These movements should either be explosive (jumps, throws, and other power movements), or high tension (isometrics)
- Whether explosive movements or isometrics, they should be done for 3-5 reps per set, or up to :05-:08 for isometrics
- Cycle through the circuit for 15-30 minutes
- Stop when you feel fully stimulated, i.e. better than when you started
- Be careful to avoid fatigue, taking full recovery breaks between exercises and rounds
- You should not feel fatigued during, or following the session
When:
Neural charge training can be used at a variety of times. Here’s a few of our favorites…
- As a pre-strength session, stimulating your nervous system for the heavier lifts to come
- As a recovery day, earlier in the training week
- That might look like a heavy lift Monday; Neural Tuesday; Moderate lift Wednesday; Movement/recovery Thursday; Volume lift Friday; Cardiac output over the weekend
- As a replacement to a day where you’re not feeling up to a regularly scheduled strength session
Play around with neural charge training, and let us know what you think!
